What are Backlinks? Tricks to Get More

Backlinks are important for the better ranks of a website on the SERPs. Backlinks not only build the authority of the domain of the website but also drive the readers through different sources. Getting quality backlinks to one site is a technical job, which turns into a dangerous factor for ranking when done inappropriately. It is mandatory for a webmaster to know what are quality links and what kind of backlinks can be harmful.

Backlinks are important if you want to rank your site in search engines. It will help you to get more potential customers and readers to your site. It is tricky to get links to your site, you do not necessarily need to buy backlinks, although many content creators do. Therefore, you should know several free methods to get more backlinks before you break the bank on backlinks

What are Backlinks, and How Do They Work?

Backlinks are links on an external website that point to your site. They are also known as inbound links or external backlinks. Backlinks from external websites are like votes for your site. More votes mean a better ranking in search engine results. Backlinks, however, are not created equal.

When optimizing your search engine ranking, you need different types of backlinks- it isn't just about quantity. The backlinks should originate from authoritative sites and be related to your target content or industry. If your website has quality, relevant links from other authoritative sources, it can be viewed by search engines as authoritative and relevant to the topic you rank for.

When search engines deem your site authoritative, you will appear higher on the search engine results page.

How to Get More Backlinks

Now that you understand how important backlinks are in SEO, here are 15 ways to increase your website's backlinks.

1. Write Quality, Link-Worthy Content

Provide other bloggers and industry leaders with the opportunity to link back to your site by creating authentic original content.

It is not enough to write just any kind of content; you have to create quality, linkable content to earn backlinks. Other bloggers and websites will link to your content if it is valuable, actionable, unique, and relevant.

Additionally, some types of content generate more shares and backlinks than others. A few examples include:

How-Tos

The best way to get backlinks to your website is to write how-to articles that explain how to do something. For example, if you are writing a blog post and the topic is "How you can save money for a Vacation," this blog could get linked to other travel blogs, finance, and budget websites.

List Articles

Listicles and list articles are simply the types of articles written as lists. These articles are viral because they are easy to read and understand.

Readers can easily scan the article and go to the specific part they are interested in.

Quizzes

It's a trend to share Quizzes online, and they are fun! But while creating a quiz, you need to focus on the niche. If the quiz you create matches the content on the site or is related, you can get the required backlinks. These will be the quality backlinks.

Definitive Guides

A definitive guide is what bloggers love to link because, in this way, they can explain their concepts easily to the readers without going into too many details. So, try to create lengthy content if you want to get more backlinks.

Statistic Roundups

Other bloggers and websites use statistics to back up their claims with the data. You should take advantage of this and create a static post. The blog, as mentioned earlier, posts ideas that will help you get backlinks naturally and free. But we need to mention another important type of Skyscraper content. We are going to discuss Skyscraper content in the next part.

2. Create Skyscraper Content

create_skycraper_content

Skyscraper content is more like a link-building strategy involving searching and finding already popular content online, improving it, and backlinking duplication.

Search your topic of interest in Google. Let's suppose if you need any guidelines on social media marketing, type social media marketing in the search bar. The results on the first page are popular and have more backlinks.

You need to pick up an article from the results on the first page and start writing your article. Make sure the article you are writing is 10x better. Please write an in-depth, long post, and images integrated article. Make sure to add extra information that the other article is Lacking. Your improved and detailed content will rank higher than the search engine's existing content.

Then, check the backlinks of the original article using a backlink checker tool. After you have found all the sites linking to the original post, you can contact those sites and request they link to your better article instead.

3. Start Guest Blogging

In addition to helping your business reach a whole new audience, guest blogging will also provide you with at least one backlink to your site via the byline.

In addition, some publications allow guest bloggers to link to their websites within their articles. In other words, you can select which post or page your website is linked to in the article.

Contact popular blogs that accept guest posts. Do a simple Google search for phrases such as: to find blogs that accept guest posts.

  • [topic keyword phrase] + “write for us”

  • [topic keyword phrase] + “guest article”

  • [topic keyword phrase] + “become a contributor”

You can send your pitch when you've found a blog you'd like to contribute to!

Provide the site owner with as much information about the post as possible, and convince them that the content will be helpful for their readers. You can boost traffic to your website with a good guest blogging strategy.

Getting a link from this source can get you a “contextual backlink” - which is the most worthy kind of backlinks. Moreover, it can shift authority, drive traffic, and increase relevant customers.

4. Create Infographics

You can add infographics to create or build links along with creating long and in-depth posts.

An infographic is a graphic representation of information or data used to convey knowledge quickly. Information graphics are one of the most shared types of content online since they're visually appealing.

5- Comment on High-Quality Blogs

It is easy to gain backlinks by commenting on blogs. The trick is to do it properly. Leaving many comments on lots of blogs for no reason other than gaining more backlinks can make you seem spammy.

Blog commenting is the perfect way to communicate with society for engagement if you want to avoid being a spammer. Commenting on the blogs would help you interact with other people in your field of interest, and you can contribute your advice and thoughts.

Blog commenting is the source of communication between webmasters and their audience, to some extent you act as the audience on the blogs of others, and being a worthy audience of that blog, whenever you share a link there, your link gets priority. Remember that the process shared here is the right path to do “Blog Commenting”, whereas, how newbies flood this specific type of link, it's volatile.

Always keep in mind the following steps while commenting on the blog post:

  1. Always acknowledge the poster by his name and put a compliment like, "Hey Jerry, another amazing post!"

  2. Do offer some useful tips and tricks that you use that can help the authors and readers

  3. Insert a link to your website or a relevant blog post of yours

Be careful while inserting the link. Otherwise, the blog owner can trash your comment, understanding that the link you provide is spam. Once you have started this practice, you should have an account to comment on or can use the comment tool to add the URL for your blog or site at the right place.

Be careful not to comment on just any blog. More specifically the blogs which are already giving authority to external links in the numbers of more than 30.  Ensure that you choose blogs that have a domain authority of 60+.

Online forums can also benefit from this strategy. Search the web for forums related to your niche and engage in the discussion there.

6. Respond to Questions on Quora

Answering questions on Quora is similar to commenting on blogs.

A question-and-answer site, Quora allows users to post, answer, and edit questions. Your website can be linked to a Quora answer that describes your niche in-depth and provides expert advice.

7. Give Testimonials

Providing links to other businesses is another way to get backlinks to your site. You can offer a testimonial to a company in exchange for a link back to your website if you love their product/service.

Most companies display testimonials prominently on their homepage or a customer success story page as social proof.

8. Look for Resource Pages

look_for_resource_pages

Website owners include links and resources on resource pages that they think their viewers will find helpful. An e-commerce site dealing with fly fishing may have a resource page that links fishing equipment reviews, maps of fishing spots, and tips for beginners.

The owners of the resource pages can add you to their list if you write about fishing or sell fishing-related products.

Often, resource pages only include products that site owners know and use. Try offering a collaboration instead of requesting a mention directly. If the website owner is familiar with your product, you will likely develop a relationship.

9. Help a Reporter Out

An online platform, Help a Reporter Out (HARO), is a platform where journalists ask for feedback from the public so they can use it in their upcoming stories. It is not something that helps the reporters in their stories, but it can help you get backlinks from your website.

Suppose you are a snow removal company. You can advise a reporter to help the homeowners prepare for the heavy snowfall. This is how they can add your insights to their course and article, and you will get a backlink.

You need to register with HARO, and they will send source requests. You must register with HARO and send source requests relevant to your industry expertise or experience straight to your inbox. Pitch to them, and the reporter will contact you if they're interested.

10. Get Interviewed

Get_interviewed

Aside from signing up for HARO, you can also contact publications, bloggers, and even vloggers to get interviewed. Getting an online interview published is a great way to earn a backlink to your site.

Do some research online to find websites and publications that regularly run online interviews relevant to your industry.

For example, if you're a blogger, BloggingTips.com once had an interview series called "Meet the Bloggers."

You can contact the websites you find with a friendly email to let them know that you're interested in giving an interview. Remember to include a little bit about your experience and how it would be of interest to their readers.

Once you've become an authority in your industry, you won't have to chase down interviews; interview invitations will start rolling in.

11. Use Influencer Marketing

use_influencer_marketing

Influencer Marketing has become increasingly popular in recent years. Influencer marketing is a form of social media marketing where products/services are endorsed by social media personalities with a dedicated following.

When you deal with an influencer, they can promote your website, link to it, write about you, share your content on social media, and more.

Paying an influencer to promote your website might seem pricey, especially for influencers with millions of followers. But luckily, you can work with micro-influencers (with followings ranging from 10,000 to 100,000) for a more affordable price and, typically, more engagement.

Plus, some influencers are willing to promote your website in exchange for free products instead of cash. So, work out a deal that benefits both parties.

To find influencers related to your industry, you can check out a website like BuzzStream. You can use Buzzstream to research influencers and build relationships with them.

12. Reclaim Your Mentions

reclaim_your_mentions

When someone mentions your website on their site but doesn't link to you, that's a missed opportunity to gain a backlink to your site. To solve this problem, you must make it your mission to reclaim your mentions.

To find out if your business has mentions floating around on the internet without a link, you can use the tool Awario. Awario will send you an alert anytime you're mentioned on the web. If you find a mention without a link, it's time to take action.

Since the author of the content mentioned your business, they already know who you are. So, all you need to do is contact them with a friendly email requesting them to add a link to the mention.

Just ensure you're only reaching out to authors who have positively mentioned your business. For instance, if you find a blog writer who rated your product poorly, you don't need that mention.

13. Fix Broken Links

Fix_broken_links

Have you ever clicked a link on the web that led you to a  404 error page? You probably have because it's pretty common.

But did you know that you can use a 404 error to get more backlinks to your site?

When you come across a resource page that has a broken link, it's the perfect opportunity to replace that broken link with your own. A 404 error is the result of a website being taken down. And that broken link is not good for the SEO of that website.

So, reach out to the website owner and let them know you found a broken link on their resource page. You can offer the website owner your content to replace it.

14. Use the Moving Man Method

use_the_moving_man_method

The Moving Man Method, a term coined by Brian Dean at Backlinko, is a similar strategy to fixing broken links. This time, instead of looking for 404 pages, you're looking for sites or resources with links to websites that have shut down, changed names, moved, or discontinued a product/service.

When a site links to another site that has undergone any of these changes, it typically leads users to a blank page. This is different from broken link building because the links aren't broken; they're just outdated.

To find pages that have changed or moved, you can do a simple Google search like:

KEYWORD + "page no longer exists" or KEYWORD + "service no longer available."

Once you find a page that meets the criteria, you can use a tool like Ahrefs to find all of the links pointing to the outdated page. Then, please notify the site owner that links to it and offer your content to replace it. Chances are they'll be happy to update their site with your backlink.

15. Spy on Your Competitors

spy_on_your_competitors

Finally, if you want to get more backlinks to your website, it's wise to learn from the best. By spying on your competitors, you can see the link-building techniques that make them so successful.

There are several ways you can spy on your competitors' link-building strategies, like:

  • Signing up for their email newsletter to get notified each time they publish new content

  • Creating a Google Alert for their company name to see each time they're mentioned online

  • Using a tool like Monitor Backlinks to check the backlinks of your top competitors

When you discover which link-building techniques your competitors are using the most, you can do the same to replicate their success.

Spying on your competitors will let you become just as good at backlink building as they are. Soon, with time and practice, you can surpass them in the search engine rankings.

Bottom Line

There you have it! You now have 15 new ways to get more backlinks and boost your search engine ranking. Start putting some of these suggestions into action, and soon your website will appear at the top of search engine results.
